I’ve come to learn that perhaps more crucial than any skill set in your career management portfolio is the ability to effectively build and leverage relationships. As you embark upon your career path remember it is important to build genuine connections with individuals along the way. You can develop a rapport with your peers, staff, administrators and faculty at your respective institutions of employment or education.
Relationships typically flourish when you are seen a person who gives rather that takes. Maintain these connections throughout the year by sending a brief note to say hello or send the tidings of the season. Ask these contacts about what’s new in their lives. If you ever need your personal contact network they will be more inclined to assist the individual with whom they’ve developed a rapport over the months or years and perhaps less inclined to lend a hand to someone who’s suddenly reached out seeking assistance during their employment search.
